Wingwomen to Reopen Former Farmington Hills Birth Center as Michigan’s First Dedicated Postpartum Facility—The Cocoon Natal Center

Farmington Hills, MI — June 1, 2025— In a groundbreaking move to address critical gaps in maternal health care, Adonica Shaw, founder of Wingwomen and nationally recognized maternal health advocate, is proud to announce the reopening of the former Farmington Hills Birth Center as The Cocoon Natal Center—a dedicated postpartum care facility and the first of its kind in Michigan.

The Cocoon Natal Center will serve as a sanctuary for families in the vital weeks after birth, offering recovery-focused services that include clinical monitoring, emotional support, lactation assistance, and wellness programming—all within a tranquil, supportive environment tailored to the postpartum experience.

“The United States continues to lead high-income countries in maternal mortality and morbidity rates,” says Adonica Shaw. “Yet there is a glaring absence of structured, accessible postpartum care facilities. The Cocoon Natal Center aims to change that—starting right here in Farmington Hills.”

A Response to a Growing Crisis

Despite medical advances, the postpartum period remains perilous for many new parents. According to the CDC, more than 50% of maternal deaths occur in the postpartum period, yet few dedicated recovery centers exist. In Michigan and across the Midwest, the closure of freestanding birth centers has deepened what experts call maternal health deserts—areas where families have limited or no access to adequate maternal care.

To combat this, Wingwomen launched the Birth Center Network Project in 2024 with a mission to reopen shuttered birth centers as modern postpartum recovery facilities. The Cocoon Natal Center is the first prototype in this visionary initiative.

“We believe that every family deserves restorative care—not just during delivery, but after. Our goal is to build a sustainable network of postpartum centers across the country,” says Shaw.

A Call for Collaboration

Shaw and the Wingwomen team are now calling on fellow maternal health advocates, public officials, and regional care providers to collaborate in reimagining maternal health. “We’d love to open the door for conversations around partnerships, policy engagement, and shared innovation,” she says.

The Cocoon Natal Center is expected to begin serving families in late 2025. The team is currently engaging local community health organizations, doulas, midwives, and hospital systems to explore strategic collaborations.
